We are adding lateral movements. Ruppert also learns to stay in basic position with a 90 degree left and right turn. We are continuing heeling and are able to ask for heeling with just a visual cue at the end of the morning session. Ruppert goes on his daily morning walk with his friend Darla. We are heading out to another location today and Ruppert travels in the trailer together with other dogs. He has his second bite development session and goes for a second afternoon walk with his friend Darla. In this episode: I am building upon the skills from last session and combining coming into basic position with right and left turns in motion with heeling. I have put these behaviors on a visual cue. Ruppert also learns to jump on a touch board. This is a very interesting session as it shows that splitting all behaviors into very tiny behaviors will lead to success. I am able to go from shaping a simple foot on the board to putting jumping and staying on the board on an audible cue in one training block. In this episode 13: After successful creating confidence on the touch board I start conditioning two positions and position transitions. I decided to only develop the Down and stand for now. Ruppert offers a lot of sitting behavior already so I do not want to reinforce that even more (yet) in my position transitions as he might develop a bias to the sitting behavior. In this episode 16:It's all about learning a new skill, Touch Pads. Touch pads are a very versatile tool that I use to develop many competitive behaviors for various sports like IGP - IPO - PSA - RING and KNPV. They are useful to create behaviors like, turning, cornering, useful for jump, (high, broad), Palisade, tunnel, send-out and so much more. In this episode I am introducing Ruppert to the touch pads. Ruppert also plays a bit of two Ball with Trainer Charlie and he gets groomed. In this episode 17:In the first session I am introducing Ruppert two a second smaller touch pad. I am continuing developing upon the skills of the previous session. I am teaching Ruppert that is totally ok to walk away from me. An important skill here in engagement work. If you don't teach the dog that but only work on engagement the dog will stick to you at all times, that might lead to "problems" when teaching skills like a send-out or handler salience in protection work. In the second sessions I am working on hind end, lateral mechanical skills to build hind end muscle memory. Useful for cornering balance etc. Ruppert enjoys Easter. <image:caption>Ruppert Series - Episode 21: Resuming Training after injury is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. Preview for non members. In this episode 21 :Rupert got injured on his foot 11 days before this video. During these 11 days we stopped training and just hand-fed Ruppert. The reason why is that if Ruppert has pain during training he can associate that pain with the training. That is something we don't want. So when dogs are not feeling well or they are injured postponing your "official" trainings is a smart move. In this video Ruppert resumes his training and both training blocks focus on basic position with focussing. You will see that with the training break he regressed a bit, which is normal as the behaviors were just developed and not yet generalized. Remember Ruppert has been with us only a month just before his injury. <image:caption>Ruppert Series - Episode 25: Raising Criteria on the Touch Pads And Engagement outdoors is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this episode 25: I raised the criteria on the touch pad by increasing the distance between them. I also asked for a better turn after going on the the touch pads and waited until Ruppert made a 100 degree to 180 degree turn. The third way I increased criteria was by increasing my distance to the touch pad. In the second session I worked on engagement outdoors after I worked the other dogs in tracking. The weather was to beautiful to go back inside. In this episode 27: I raised the criteria on the touch pad again by combining multiple transitions from one touch pad to the other. I worked on discrimination of visual cues and taught Ruppert to ignore my body movements. I also introduced a tertiary reinforcer "Good" to condition Ruppert to "stay in behavior" and that the secondary reinforcer ("the click") will come. <image:title>Ruppert Series - Building a protection dog - Ruppert Series -Episode 28: Teaching Bella</image:title>
<image:caption>Ruppert Series -Episode 28: Teaching Bella is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this episode 28: I used Ruppert to "teach" Bella proper energy levels when in certain environments. With the help of Dr. Bandura's observational learning Bella modeled Ruppert's behavior when laying dow. Bella is a three year old female spayed German Shepherd with intense prey drive. Bella suffers from chronic overstimulation and prey lock which result in her mis-directing and redirecting her frustration onto her environment. Behaviors like excessive canine screaming, trash biting, barking, digging are often her behaviors of choice to do so. Many of these problems start with a very young age 5 to 8 weeks in where the pup never learns how to control drive. After years of unintentionally being rewarded this becomes a very addicting state of mind for the dog and in turn also the behavior. In the next month I will use different dogs and different counter conditioning and extinction techniques to re-direct these unwanted behaviors and show her that calm assertive behavior will lead to more success. <image:caption>Ruppert Series - Episode 29: Having a bad day - Many Smells Form a Big Distraction is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this episode 29: I decided to use the drone as a distraction in my engagement work combined with 3 people in my direct environment. Surprisingly the drone was no distraction at all for Ruppert but the smells in the grass from different dogs urinating (including 1 bitch in heat) and pooping was too challenging for him. Ruppert check out with my many times and this was by far the worst session we had together. Lesson learning is to work more in environments that challenge him with scent and salient smells and teach him to have positive salience towards me and negative salience towards the smells and that interacting with the smells will lead to having no food. <image:title>Basic Obedience Skills - Transitioning from Luring to Audible Cues With Bite Bonus!</image:title>
<image:caption>In this video I explain the concepts on how to transition from luring to visual cue, to audible cue. I am doing this with the foundation of positions and position transitions. The behaviors in this video are not the end behaviors that I want to see with positions transitions but are the foundation that I need to go to the next step in training. That step is taking the behaviors we have developed in this face to the touch boards and fine tuning them. The touch boards are an important element in training the positions as the dog will learn that he can't move in the positions. (forward, backward, sideways) He can't leave the board basically and needs to have four paws on the board at all times. This face will require good mechanical skill in luring, reward manipulation, reward placement, observation skills and Timing! Timing of the secondary reinforcer is crucial and will play ALMOST the most important element that will determine learning progress. If any of the required skill lack, go practice them without the dog. Keep your training blocks small with multiple sessions and about 5 to 10 repetitions depending on how well your dog performs. You will see that with each dog I keep the training block to about 5 - 8 minutes and within that block I have multiple session with multiple repetitions. The key is that after 2 sessions within that training block you should see progress. If you don't see progress there is something wrong with your training techniques (luring, reward, timing, etc. ) Cancel the training block and go back to the drawing board and try to figure out what went wrong. ( 99.99% on the human side) Watch this video to the end as I added a small bonus. As a reward I allowed my girl Falca to hurt someone..</image:caption>

<image:title>Basic Obedience Skills - Touch Boards in Obedience Training - Fundamental use</image:title>
<image:caption>Touch Boards, an important and useful concept to teach. I use touch pads and boards in almost all of my training. Examples of behaviors I create with them are, Send out, position transitions, Guard for Schutzhund, high jumps for Ring Sports (French, Belgian and Mondio), Recall fronts, Retrieve fronts and many many more. Most trainers move to fast developing new behaviors and setting new criteria. They also don't have a good understanding how the boards work and don't know how to transition of them and fade them out. (thats another video) Sometime I use boxes too, like apple boxes if I have dogs that have issues with transitions. (also another video) Building touch boards is fairly easy, a couple of 2x4 and a sheet of ply wood will do, add some outdoor carpet and voila. Measurements, Take the length of your dog, front feet to butt and add 6 inches, take the width of your dog, wide stance front feet and add 3 inches. This will allow for in-place movement but also narrow enough that when the dog leans side ways he will be off the touch board and therefor not meet the criteria. Many trainers work with wrong size board for their dog. They see one work on youtube with a board and build one exactly like that and then wonder why their pooch moves around. In this video you will see a green novice dog, then a puppy, adolescents in the work, and a finished product doing related behaviors to the touch board work.</image:caption>

Most trainers move to fast developing new behaviors and setting new criteria. They also don't have a good understanding how the boards work and don't know how to transition of them and fade them out. (thats another video) In this video you will see my puppy Walkiria being exposed to the raised boards for the first time. She adapts to it very fast. The raised boards give new challenges for the dog, when the paw goes off the don't feel solid ground underneath but the paw is dangling in the air. Take your time building up the confidents. After a couple of seconds Walkiria figures it out and understand the new criteria that I have set. We can train positions transitions much easier now without the need that I change my body language while doing so. With touch boards on ground level we need to bend down our knees which alters the body language and is trying and annoying to be honest frankly. Sometime I use boxes too, like apple boxes if I have dogs that have issues with transitions. <image:title>Bella Series - Behavior modification - Bella Series - Prologue - MUST WATCH</image:title>
<image:caption>Welcome to the Bella Series on the members only section of the ISDC website. In this series I am working with a chronic overstimulated prey locking Female German Shepherd. Bella is a 3 year old spayed female GSD. If you have watched my From Tyrant to Teacher video series you have learned that my relationship based teaching system is based upon Trust and Respect between dog and human and that the interaction between the two should be Fun. In this system I use mainly operant training techniques in creating a teaching environment that promotes maximum clarity in communication between dog and human. In my teaching I use positive Reinforcement. However in very rare cases, like Bella, positive reinforcement is not always what bring maximum clarity. In this case, with a chronic overstimulated dog, the ability for the dog to make correct choices of different choices is impaired because of the lock on certain stimuli in her environment. In Bella’s case she responds heavily to cars, motorcycles, any animal, by lunching, barking, trash biting etc. She will attack trees when prey locked and is unable to have interactions with stimuli that initially triggered the first response. When the mind state of a dog is such like Bella and the cortisol levels are that high, redirecting with food or a ball will have no effect. Counter conditioning by waiting it out is impossible and setting the environment up for success also as we have no control of public places. It is in these rare instances that the use over aversives will have a much better outcome. That doesn’t mean that we are going to cause the dog severe pain or that we are going to use phycological intimidation. That also would not have the effect we want. Proper aversive implementation is very difficult. In Bella’s case I decided to use a prong collar. The proper use of the prong collar is not easy and hence should be used by professionals. The prong collar is series of chain links connect to each other with the open ends facing the dog’s new. It is also knows as a pinch collar with I believe is misleading as it doesn’t actually pinch the dog. A choke chain on the other hand does. When fitted and used correctly the prong collar actually protect the dog from trachea damage caused by inexperience handlers or by the dog itself when it pulls on the collar due to excitement or bad behavior. A choke chain on the other hand is one of the prime cause of trachea damage. The collar needs to be fittest perfectly and properly to ensure you don’t hurt the dog. It should be placed high on the dog’s neck just behind the ears and all extra links should be removed so that it is snug to the neck without drooping. A drooping of the collar will cause the skin of the neck to get pinched and that actually hurt the dog. Also collars that sit low on the neck, like a flat collar, will cause an oppositional reflex that will result in pulling against the collar. That is the reason is almost impossible to teach a dog proper leash manners when using a very wide flat collar. The controversy and negative association formed with almost any training tool out there is not because of the tool itself but because of the improper use. I see trainers out there using tools, like the prong collar and e-collar that have no idea on how to use them. Even the use of a regular flat collar is not easy. Then when using aversive training techniques your observational skill on behavior and timing and leash techniques need to be more on point than when using a clicker and should ONLY be used a modification case and NEVER be used in teaching new behaviors. With that out of the way let get into the series.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BELLA SERIES- Episode 3: Clarity and Consistency in Communication is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this Episode 3: Clarity and Consistency in Communication is I would say the number 1 most important factor in gaining and maintaining trust between k9 and human. In this training session I am working on consistency in the communication between Bella and myself. I am reinforcing that certain behaviors performed by Bella in combination with a certain mind state has different outcomes. Calm and Assertive mind state or energy in combination with the correct behaviors followed after an audible stimulus will result in a positive consequence. On the flip side lack of control and a faulty response to an audible cue will result in a negative consequence. As soon as her behavior and mind state changes either way, the consequence changes. So how does my behavior influences what happens to me? <image:caption>BELLA SERIES- Episode 4: Getting Better with Stimulus Control is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this Episode 4:Bella is showing improvement with control to various stimuli. Again Stimulus control is a term used to describe when a behavior by the presence or absence of a stimulus. In Bella's case, the audible stimulus of a motorcycle makes her anxious and she expresses that with vocalization in the form of k9 screaming and whining and barking, with the visual stimulus of a motorcycle she will exhibit the behavior of lunging and attacking the motorcycle. In my treatment with Bella I use Stimulus Control Therapy in where I will counter condition previous conditioned responses to certain stimuli (often pavlovian with psychophysiologic responses such as cortisol peaks, raised blood pressure etc and the association of the motorcycle with stress. ) In this session Bella is making a lot of progress and is starting to show Self corrective behavior. The aversive consequence for Bella is actually giving her a calming effect. In this Episode 6 :After training for 10 days at the training facility and surrounding area's it was time to take Bella to another environment and observe how she behaved with "new" stimuli. Shortly after coming out of the Car I noticed and increase in anxiousness. Bella showed that by pacing and vocalization (whining and soft screaming). I decided to stay at the same location and work on getting to a calmer mind state before I "allowed" her to explore the area. The environment was full of audibles (birds, cars, etc) smells and visual stimuli that trigger Bella. We were able to go on a 30 minute walk in the park and were successfully dealing with challenges. <image:caption>BELLA SERIES - Episode 7: Reinforcing Clarity in our Communication is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this Episode 7 I am exposing Bella to another group session with 2 Dog sensitive German Shepherds and a dog neutral malinois. In this session Bella's energy is high coming out of the car and is anticipating excitement walking towards the training field. We were the last team to arrive at the fields and she could already smell and hear the other dogs. You will see that see is trying to redirect her frustration towards the trees and via excessive vocalization. The emphasis in the session was to reinforce the clarity in our communication and the consistency of consequences in direct relation to her behavior. <image:caption>BELLA SERIES - Episode 8: Things are coming together is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this Episode 8: It's been 13 days since Bella started her work with me and in that time frame she has shown a lot of improvements. Today I am exposing her to new stimuli, such as storage containers, mole hills etc. At the start of the session Bella showed a lot of Drive leaking and excessive vocalization coming from the anticipation of getting out of the car and being conditioned that exciting stuff always follows after that. I am waiting until Bella displays calmer behavior and reward her with movement and food. The rest of the session was great. Both the visual stimulus as well as the audible stimulus of the motorcycle have similar behavior responses and psychophysiological responses. <image:caption>BELLA SERIES - Episode 10: Training with Residual Cortisol is Live in the member only section of the ISDC website. In this Episode 10: In a second training session, 30 minutes after the motorcycle exposure, I am demonstrating the effects of Residual Cortisol on your dog. Bella did not show a lot of external signs of stress in the motorcycle training session however Cortisol levels were elevated. In the previous sessions from the past week exposures to cars did not result in excessive vocalization or lunging. In this session due to residual cortisol build up, but still under the threshold, exposure to the car brings her over threshold. An example of cortisol stacking.
